Students are building their own geodesic domes out of marshmallows and toothpicks for the Club STEAM project right now. ACH Bobcats are also growing their reading skills. Depending on their age, students are learning letter sounds, “sight” words, and/or working on fluency or comprehension. There really are a lot of strategies being used to help our students read fluently.
Something that may be new to parents are phonological and phonemic awareness activities. You may find yourself unknowingly working with phonological awareness skills when you say things like, “Tommy begins with the /t/ sound.” Or when you read books with rhyming words and after repeated readings, your child supplies the rhyming word. Helping your child understand that words are made up of individual sounds is a huge step towards reading success. Check out the February newsletter for fun ideas to help your child become an awesome reader!
