Chemical Disposal Statement

April 7, 2016

On Friday, April 8, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Oregon State Police Hazardous Device Technicians will be at Heppner High School to dispose of some chemicals. According to Kevin DelGrande, OSP Hazardous Device Technician, “We are taking a proactive approach to remove and dispose of chemicals from the campus that were no longer needed and could become hazardous in the future.”

Earlier this week, DEQ representatives inspected chemicals at all three high schools of the Morrow County School District as part of an initiative by the agency to offer this service free of charge to all Oregon schools. No other reactive chemicals at the other schools were needed to be disposed of in this manner. “We are grateful to the DEQ and OSP for their willingness to assist our district in this process,” said Dirk Dirksen, superintendent of the Morrow County School District.

The chemicals are not currently hazardous and have not posed a threat to students or staff. Since there is no school on Friday in Heppner, no students or staff will be in the area of disposal.
